Basalt High School football coach Carl Frerichs was honored on Wednesday by being named the Denver Broncos Tackle Football Coach of the Week via the Colorado High School Activities Association and CHSAANow.com.

Frerichs, who is in his 17th season as head coach, has the Longhorns sitting at a perfect 6-0 this fall and in line to snag one of the top seeds for the Class 2A playoffs. Basalt is coming off an impressive 42-7 rout of Coal Ridge and is scheduled to host Moffat County (2-4) on Friday for homecoming. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Aspen (4-2), suddenly winners of three straight, will host defending 2A state champion Delta (4-2) this week. That game has been moved back to its normal slot at 7 p.m. on Friday on the AHS turf.

After playing two of five games in the 2A West league, only Aspen and Basalt made it to 2-0. Delta and Coal Ridge are both 1-1, while Moffat and Middle Park are both 0-2.

Aspen volleyball (7-7 overall) returns to the court on Thursday with a game at North Fork (6-8). The Skiers will then compete at the Queen of the Mountain tournament on Saturday, hosted by Battle Mountain.

Basalt (3-8) played on Tuesday, losing 3-2 to Roaring Fork. The Longhorns head to Gunnison (14-2) on Thursday.

Roaring Fork (6-9) plays on Thursday at Olathe (5-12).

Of the valley teams, Aspen has the best chance to make the postseason, as it entered Wednesday evening with an RPI of 28. Roaring Fork was No. 47 and Basalt was No. 55.

Area soccer teams are entering their penultimate weekend of regular-season play with postseason spots possibly on the line.

Basalt (4-7 overall) had an RPI of 28 as of Wednesday afternoon, putting them just inside the playoff cutoff in Class 3A. The Longhorns play at Steamboat Springs (4-6-1) on Thursday before traveling to Aspen on Saturday morning.

Aspen (3-7) had an RPI of 39 as of Wednesday afternoon, meaning the Skiers still have some work to do to make the playoffs. AHS will host Vail Mountain (4-4-2) on Thursday before the Longhorns come to town on Saturday.

Roaring Fork (8-2-2) had an RPI of 5 as of Wednesday afternoon, making them a virtual lock to see the postseason. The Rams, 5-0-2 over their past seven matches, played to a 0-0 draw with Coal Ridge on Tuesday. They are off this weekend before heading to Montrose on Tuesday.

The softball season has officially come to its end for Basalt and Aspen, as neither team made the 32-team postseason field in Class 3A.

Eaton is the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Strasburg and No. 3 University.

Per MaxPreps, Basalt finishes the season 6-17 overall, while Aspen went 0-16.

The tennis season has come to an end for Aspen and Basalt, as neither team qualified any individuals for this week’s Class 4A state tournament in Pueblo. Both teams did have players named as state alternates, based off finishing third in last week’s regional tournament in Grand Junction.

Those players include Aspen freshman Gaspar Riboud at No. 1 singles; Aspen’s No. 2 doubles team of Nicholas Stephens and Luke Abbaszadeh; Basalt’s No. 3 doubles team of Tyler Portman and Chadwick New; and Aspen’s No. 4 doubles team of Chase Slesinger-Hall and Soren Tudge.

Cross-country teams continue to wind down for the Oct. 25 regional meet, hosted by Middle Park in Fraser. That said, Aspen is scheduled to compete at the non-traditional Montrose Relays on Saturday, which is typically a fun, end-of-season meet.

With golf season having concluded, CHSAA recently released its all-state teams, which is essentially a list of top placers from the state tournament.

Basalt sophomore Griffin Didier, who was state runner-up, and BHS senior Jackson Stewart were both named first team. Aspen junior Houston Benvenuto and AHS senior Ryan Rigney were both named second team all-state.

Evergreen’s Brad Garrett and Tyler Long were named 3A coach and golfer of the year, respectively.
