Roundup: Granite Hills scores record-breaking 90 points in win; top-ranked teams cruise – San Diego Union-Tribune

Midway through the third quarter Friday night, Grossmont High School went for a 2-point conversion to take the lead over No. 4 Granite Hills. An upset in the making? Not this time.

Final score: Granite Hills 90, Grossmont 46.

The 90 points and combined 136 points are CIF San Diego Section 11-man records. The previous game-high was 82, set by Lincoln in a shutout win over San Francisco Wilson in 1987. In 2020, Santa Fe Christian beat Orange Glen 81-54 in a game with a combined 135 points.

“It was such a weird feeling to look up and see 90 points on the scoreboard. It sure didn’t seem like it,” said Granite Hills coach Kellan Cobbs. “This was the craziest game I’ve ever coached. There is certainly no bad blood because they were right with us until the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth, when we scored three straight times with a short field off turnovers.

“The teams combined for 213 plays when normally you have 80 or 90. It was like two games in one. We both run up-tempo offenses and their quarterback (Thomas Donovan) was lights-out.”

Friday’s game went so late, Grossmont coach Anthony Lawrence said, that one of the school buses transporting his team had to leave.

“If you’d told me we’d score 46 points against a team like Granite Hills, an Open Division playoff team, I’d have been pretty happy,” said Lawrence. “But you can’t have six turnovers and fail to convert a key fourth down against a team like that.

“I was proud of how the kids fought, especially the first three quarters.”

Granite Hills quarterback Zac Benitez completed 28 of 41 passes for 371 yards and eight touchdowns. Only two other QBs in section history have thrown for more TDs in a game. Midway Baptist’s Lance Webb put up a national-record 11 in a 2000 win over Noli Indian, and Kearny’s Brodie Stump threw for nine against O’Farrell Charter earlier this season.
